Huntington Ingalls Industries Christens Vessel Ahead of Market Rebound

Huntington Ingalls Industries recently marked a significant operational milestone with the christening of the USS George M. Neal. The vessel, a Virginia-class submarine, was named after a Medal of Honor recipient and represents the continued production of nuclear-powered submarines at the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division. This division acts as one of two prime contractors for the program, working in tandem with General Dynamics Electric Boat.

Following the ceremony, market attention has shifted to the valuation of the defense contractor. Recent commentary suggests that the company’s stock may be trading at a discount relative to its intrinsic value, with some estimates indicating a potential upside of roughly 27%. This perspective comes as the firm maintains its role as the sole provider of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and a key builder of attack submarines.

From a trading standpoint, Huntington Ingalls is currently performing positively. The stock is up 3.32% today, with shares trading at $275.80. This move higher comes after a previous close of $266.94. The company, which falls under the Industrials sector within the Aerospace & Defense industry, holds a market capitalization of approximately $10.87 billion. Its operations are divided into three primary segments: Ingalls Shipbuilding, Newport News Shipbuilding, and Mission Technologies.

While the Newport News division focuses on nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines, the Ingalls segment is responsible for the design and construction of non-nuclear surface combatants for the Navy, such as destroyers and amphibious assault ships. The third segment, Mission Technologies, provides defense and federal solutions across various domains, including cyber, intelligence, and electronic warfare.

What to watch

  • Future contract awards related to the Virginia-class submarine program and Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine development.
  • Upcoming quarterly earnings reports to assess revenue flow across the Ingalls and Newport News segments.
  • Updates on the Department of Defense’s budget allocation for shipbuilding and maritime maintenance.
