Huntington Ingalls Broadens Workforce Pact with Labor Department

Huntington Ingalls Industries is expanding an existing partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor aimed at strengthening the maritime labor pipeline. The agreement, announced by the department, focuses on workforce development initiatives designed to support the shipbuilding sector. The collaboration is intended to help the defense prime address the logistical and technical challenges of maintaining a skilled labor force required for naval construction and maintenance.

As the sole builder of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and one of two builders of submarines, the shipmaker relies heavily on a specialized industrial base. The expanded partnership will likely target recruitment, training, and retention programs to ensure the company can meet its manufacturing obligations. The initiative underscores the ongoing effort within the industrial sector to bridge the gap between available tradespeople and the specific technical demands of modern naval shipbuilding.

Huntington Ingalls operates through its primary shipbuilding divisions, Ingalls Shipbuilding and Newport News Shipbuilding, alongside its Mission Technologies segment. The company’s stock was recently trading at $299.90, reflecting a slight decline of approximately 0.03% from the previous close. The firm holds a market capitalization of roughly $10.87 billion.

What to watch

  • Future updates on the specific training programs and funding allocated through the Department of Labor partnership.
  • Upcoming contract awards related to nuclear submarine and aircraft carrier construction at the Newport News and Ingalls divisions.
  • Quarterly earnings reports for data on sector performance and labor-related operational costs.
