HD Hyundai Installs Automated Welding Technology at Huntington Ingalls

Huntington Ingalls Industries has integrated a new automated welding system into its shipyard operations, supplied by South Korean industrial heavyweight HD Hyundai. The technology is designed to enhance manufacturing efficiency and precision during the vessel construction process.

The implementation of this advanced system underscores a growing trend in naval shipbuilding toward automating complex fabrication tasks. By utilizing HD Hyundai’s equipment, the shipbuilder aims to improve the consistency of welds while potentially reducing the physical strain associated with manual welding procedures. This collaboration highlights the increasing exchange of industrial technologies between international defense manufacturers.

Huntington Ingalls operates as the sole provider of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and one of two providers of submarines. The company is organized into three primary segments: Ingalls, Newport News, and Mission Technologies. In addition to building non-nuclear surface combatants, the firm is heavily involved in the overhaul and repair of existing military fleets.

Shares of Huntington Ingalls were trading lower in the recent session. The stock was down 1.92%, with a price of $323.06, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $12.73 billion.

What to watch

  • Future updates on the operational performance and throughput metrics of the newly installed welding system.
  • Upcoming contract awards or modifications related to surface combatant construction at the Ingalls and Newport News divisions.
  • HII’s next earnings report for guidance on segment margins and Mission Technologies growth.
