Rocketdyne Re-establishes as Standalone Entity; L3Harris Keeps Strategic Programs

L3Harris Technologies, Inc. has finalized the separation of its propulsion business, with the unit officially resuming operations as the independent Rocketdyne company. The transaction allows Rocketdyne to function as a standalone entity focused on power and propulsion systems, while L3Harris retains key manufacturing and program responsibilities.

As part of the separation agreement, L3Harris continues to hold significant contracts within the propulsion domain. Notably, the company will maintain work related to the RS-25 engines for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) and various strategic missile programs. This arrangement ensures that L3Harris preserves its role in critical space and defense supply chains without the overhead of the broader propulsion manufacturing base.

Rocketdyne’s history dates back to the early era of rocketry, and this move returns the brand to independent status following its previous integration into larger aerospace contractors. The newly independent company will now manage its own operations and market strategy in the propulsion sector.

L3Harris, organized into segments including Space & Mission Systems and Missile Solutions, continues to provide mission-critical solutions for government and commercial customers. The company’s stock was trading at $289.40, representing a 0.48% increase from the previous close.

What to watch

  • Future contract announcements regarding the RS-25 engine production and sustainment.
  • Rocketdyne’s initial operating results as an independent public entity.
  • Up quarterly earnings from L3Harris for updated guidance on the Missile Solutions segment.
