Burry Maintains Short Position on Palantir Amidst Software Surge

Michael Burry’s investment firm, Scion Asset Management, has maintained a bearish derivatives position on Palantir Technologies Inc., according to a recent regulatory filing. The move comes as the data analytics firm continues to experience significant upward momentum driven by broader market enthusiasm for artificial intelligence.

Palantir, known for its Gotham and Foundry platforms, provides software that integrates with disparate systems to assist in counterterrorism investigations and operations for intelligence communities in the U.S., U.K., and internationally. While the company has deep roots in the defense and intelligence sectors, it has recently expanded its commercial footprint, capitalizing on the surge in demand for AI-enabled tools.

The decision to hold or “refresh” the short bet highlights a divergence between Burry’s valuation concerns and the current market sentiment. Despite the skepticism from the investor famed for predicting the 2008 housing crash, Palantir’s stock performance has remained robust. As of the latest market snapshot, the company’s shares were trading at $175.23, representing an increase of nearly 2% for the day. This price action places the company’s market capitalization at approximately $379.81 billion.

Short sellers bet against a stock by borrowing shares and selling them, hoping to buy them back later at a lower price. The sustained rally in technology stocks associated with artificial intelligence has historically created a difficult environment for such positions, potentially leading to losses for those betting on a decline.

What to watch

  • Future SEC filings indicating changes to Scion Asset Management’s position size.
  • Palantir’s upcoming quarterly earnings report for details on government versus commercial revenue growth.
  • Any updates on new contract awards within the U.S. or U.K. defense sectors.
