L3Harris folds Shield AI counter-drone software into VAMPIRE platform

L3Harris Technologies has integrated Shield AI’s counter-unmanned aircraft system (counter-UAS) software into its VAMPIRE system, according to a report by Military Embedded Systems. The pairing brings autonomy and software capabilities together with a widely deployed counter-drone platform as demand for such systems grows among defence customers.

VAMPIRE — short for Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment — is a palletized kit designed to be mounted on a range of vehicles, allowing operators to counter unmanned aerial threats without a dedicated platform. Shield AI develops autonomy software and related technologies intended to operate in contested environments where GPS and communications may be degraded.

The integration reflects a broader industry trend of primes and software-focused defence firms collaborating rather than competing, as counter-UAS becomes one of the faster-growing requirement areas for government buyers. Combining a vehicle-agnostic hardware system with third-party autonomy software can shorten the path from development to fielding, a priority for procurement officials in recent budget cycles.

Market snapshot

L3Harris Technologies (LHX) trades at $261.31, down 1.39% from the prior close of $265.00. The company carries a market capitalization of approximately $48.78 billion and is classified in the Aerospace & Defense industry within the Industrials sector. L3Harris operates through three segments: Space & Mission Systems, Communications & Spectrum Dominance, and Missile Solutions.

Shield AI is a privately held defence technology company and does not trade publicly, so the commercial impact of the integration will register primarily through L3Harris’s public reporting.

What to watch

  • Any contract announcements or delivery milestones tied to VAMPIRE configurations that include the Shield AI software.
  • L3Harris’s upcoming earnings report and whether management references counter-UAS demand in segment commentary.
  • Additional industry partnerships pairing autonomy software providers with established hardware platforms.
