Huntington Ingalls Lands $336 Million Navy Award Tied to Future Aircraft Carrier CVN 82

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has secured a $336 million contract from the U.S. Navy for advance work on CVN 82, a future Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, according to a release circulated this week. The award places early-stage procurement and planning activity in motion for a vessel that will eventually be assembled at the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding yard in Virginia, the nation’s sole builder of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.

Long-lead contracts of this kind are a familiar rhythm in carrier construction. Because Ford-class carriers are among the most complex platforms the Navy buys, early funding allows the shipbuilder to order specialty materials and begin design and planning years before final assembly. CVN 82 will follow CVN 80 and CVN 81 in a class that represents the largest ships in the U.S. fleet.

The award is strategically significant for HII, whose Newport News segment anchors its shipbuilding business alongside the Ingalls segment in Mississippi and the Mission Technologies services arm. Carrier work spans decades — from construction through mid-life refueling and complex overhauls (RCOH, the mid-service nuclear refueling and modernization each carrier undergoes) — making these awards a key indicator of the long-term backlog underpinning the company’s revenue visibility.

Market reaction on the day of the news was negative. Shares of HII traded at $285.93, down 2.08% from the prior close of $292.00, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $11.5 billion. The Industrials-sector company is classified in the Aerospace & Defense industry.

Neither the release nor the company indicated a completion timeline for CVN 82, which remains in the early phases of a construction cycle that typically runs many years for Ford-class hulls. Further contract actions — including detailed design and construction awards — would be expected as the program matures.

What to watch

  • HII’s upcoming quarterly earnings report, where management typically updates carrier-program progress and backlog figures.
  • Follow-on Navy contract announcements for CVN 82, particularly any detailed design and construction award.
  • Company guidance tied to the Newport News segment, which carries the carrier workload.
  • Congressional appropriations activity affecting Ford-class procurement schedules.
