L3Harris Brings Shield AI’s Drone-Tracking Software Into Its VAMPIRE System Through Licensing Deal

L3Harris Technologies has licensed drone-tracking software from defence technology firm Shield AI for integration into its VAMPIRE counter-drone system, according to a report circulated this week by Tectonic Defense.

VAMPIRE — short for Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment — is a modular kit designed to be mounted on a range of tactical vehicles, allowing crews to engage small uncrewed aerial systems with laser-guided rockets. The addition of third-party tracking software reflects a broader industry pattern in which established primes are licensing specialised autonomy and sensing technology from venture-backed defence startups rather than building every capability in-house.

The deal underscores growing commercial and government interest in counter-drone (C-UAS) technology, a segment that has attracted increased procurement attention as small uncrewed aerial systems proliferate across conflict zones. Software that can detect, track and classify drones is a core component of these systems, and partnerships of this kind allow primes like L3Harris to accelerate integration timelines for existing product lines.

For Shield AI, a San Diego-based company known for its autonomy software and artificial-intelligence pilot programs, the licensing agreement represents another route into established defence platforms, complementing its own hardware programs. Software licensing arrangements of this type have become a common mechanism for smaller firms to scale their technology across larger manufacturers’ fleets without surrendering full platform control.

Market reaction to the news was muted. Shares of L3Harris Technologies (LHX) traded at $258.05, down 1.47% from the previous close of $261.91, giving the company a market capitalisation of approximately $48.8 billion. L3Harris operates through three segments — Space & Mission Systems, Communications & Spectrum Dominance, and Missile Solutions — and is among the largest US defence primes by revenue.

Neither the terms of the license nor the financial value of the arrangement were disclosed in the report. It is also not yet clear whether the integration applies to systems already fielded or to future VAMPIRE production.
