L3Harris Wraps Production of Initial F-16 Viper Shield Electronic Warfare Units

L3Harris Technologies has completed production of its first Viper Shield electronic warfare (EW) systems for the F-16 fighter aircraft, marking a manufacturing milestone for the programme, according to a release published by ASDNews.

Electronic warfare systems are onboard suites designed to help aircraft detect and manage threats in their surrounding electromagnetic environment. The Viper Shield system, developed by L3Harris Technologies (LHX), is an internally mounted digital EW suite intended for F-16 variants, allowing the aircraft to carry self-protection capabilities without external pods that can take up hardpoints needed for weapons or fuel tanks.

Completing first production units is a standard but significant step in a defence programme’s lifecycle. It signals the transition from development and low-rate activities into serial production, typically followed by integration, testing and delivery phases with customers. The F-16, originally built by Lockheed Martin, remains one of the most widely operated fighter aircraft globally, and upgrade programmes such as Viper Shield address demand from international operators seeking to modernise legacy fleets.

Melbourne, Florida-headquartered L3Harris provides mission-critical solutions for government and commercial customers, organised into segments including Space & Mission Systems and Communications & Spectrum Dominance, the latter of which houses much of the company’s electronic warfare portfolio.

In trading on Tuesday, L3Harris shares changed hands at $262.14, up roughly 0.09% from the prior close of $261.91, giving the company a market capitalisation of approximately $48.8 billion.

Foreign military sales have been a central driver of F-16 modernisation activity in recent years, with multiple allied nations funding fleet upgrades. Programmes of this kind are typically delivered across multi-year schedules, meaning completion of initial production sets the stage for subsequent delivery announcements rather than representing the end of the effort.
