HII Hits Milestone With First ROMULUS 151 Unmanned Vessel Hull

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has completed the first hull of its ROMULUS 151, an unmanned surface vessel designed with artificial intelligence capabilities, as part of a program covering five AI-enabled vessels intended to support U.S. maritime forces.

The completion of the initial hull marks a tangible production step for the program, which sits within the growing field of uncrewed maritime systems. Shipbuilders across the defence industry have been investing in autonomous surface vessels as government customers explore ways to complement traditional crewed fleets with smaller, software-driven platforms.

HII, headquartered in the United States, is the country’s largest military shipbuilder, operating through three segments: Ingalls, Newport News, and Mission Technologies. The company designs, builds, overhauls, and repairs military ships, including non-nuclear vessels, and has in recent years expanded its focus toward unmanned and autonomy-related technologies through its technical divisions.

The ROMULUS 151 program’s structure — five vessels with AI at the core of their design — reflects a broader industry shift toward integrating machine learning and autonomous navigation into shipbuilding pipelines rather than treating them as afterthoughts. For HII, the first completed hull provides a physical baseline from which follow-on vessels and testing phases can proceed.

In afternoon trading, HII shares were priced at $287.67, down 1.03% from the previous close of $290.65, giving the company a market capitalisation of roughly $11.46 billion. The stock trades in the industrials sector within the aerospace and defence industry.

Unmanned surface vessels remain an evolving category, and milestones like this one are typically followed by outfitting, integration of autonomy software, and sea trials before any operational evaluation. HII has not indicated in the announcement a specific delivery timeline for the remaining four hulls in the program.

More details are available in the original release as reported by Defence Industry Europe.

What to watch

  • Progress on the remaining four ROMULUS 151 hulls and any updated delivery schedule from HII.
  • HII’s upcoming quarterly earnings, which may provide commentary on unmanned systems revenue and program costs.
  • Potential contract announcements or testing milestones tied to the autonomy software integrated into the vessels.
