L3Harris’ VAMPIRE System Lands U.S. Navy Selection for Maritime Drone Defence

The U.S. Navy has chosen L3Harris Technologies’ VAMPIRE counter-unmanned aircraft system to bolster its littoral defences against unmanned aerial threats, according to a report by Defence Industry Europe. The decision adds a naval application to a system that has already drawn attention for its role supporting Ukraine’s ground-based air defence efforts.

VAMPIRE — short for Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment — is a lightweight, modular kit that can be mounted on a variety of vehicles or platforms. It launches laser-guided rockets designed to intercept small drones, a category of threat that has grown rapidly in both frequency and sophistication across recent conflicts. Because the system is palletized and adaptable, it can be integrated onto different platforms without extensive modification, which is central to its appeal for naval use near coastlines.

The Navy’s move reflects a broader push across the U.S. Department of Defense to field scalable counter-drone solutions that can be procured and deployed quickly, particularly in congested coastal environments where larger missile-based air defences can be costly per engagement. Littoral zones — the waters close to shore — present distinct challenges for detecting and defeating small unmanned aircraft, and relatively low-cost interceptors such as guided rockets are increasingly viewed as a complement to traditional air defence layers.

For L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX), the selection extends the reach of a product line that has become one of the more visible counter-drone offerings in the company’s portfolio. The company, which operates through segments including Space & Mission Systems and Communications & Spectrum Dominance, has positioned itself across a wide range of defence technology domains. Its shares traded at $255.74 in recent activity, down 0.57% from the prior close of $257.21, valuing the company at roughly $48.8 billion.

The announcement arrives amid intensifying competition in the counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) market, where established primes and smaller defence technology firms are vying for contracts as navies and armies worldwide rearm against drone threats.
