L3Harris Wins U.S. Navy Contract for Vampire Counter-Drone Systems

L3Harris Technologies has been selected by the U.S. Navy to deliver its Vampire counter-unmanned aircraft systems, the company announced. The selection adds the modular defence kit to the Navy’s toolkit for addressing the growing presence of small unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, which have become an increasingly common concern for naval forces operating in contested airspace.

Vampire — short for Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR/Electronic Warfare System — is a bolt-on system designed to be installed on a range of vehicle platforms without extensive modification. The system pairs soft-kill electronic effects with kinetic interceptors, giving operators multiple layers against small drone threats. Its palletized design is intended to allow rapid fielding and reconfiguration across different platforms.

Counter-unmanned aircraft systems, often abbreviated as C-UAS, have drawn growing attention and budget priority across the U.S. Department of Defense, as inexpensive commercial drones have proven difficult to counter with traditional air-defence systems designed for aircraft and missiles. Procurement efforts like the Navy’s reflect a broader push to scale up defensive options quickly and cost-effectively.

For L3Harris (LHX), the award lands amid a mixed trading session. The Melbourne, Florida-based company’s shares traded at $254.79, down 0.94% from the previous close of $257.21, valuing the defence prime at roughly $48.8 billion. L3Harris operates across three reporting segments — Space & Mission Systems, Communications & Spectrum Dominance, and Missile Solutions — and positions itself as a provider of mission-critical technology for government and commercial customers worldwide.

The company has been among the more active primes in the counter-drone market, and the Navy selection follows a series of U.S. and international orders for the Vampire system in recent years. The platform’s vehicle-agnostic architecture has made it a candidate for rapid-deployment programmes where speed of fielding is a key requirement.
