Air Force Floats Cargo Aircraft as Launch Platforms for Autonomous Drone Swarms

The U.S. Air Force has issued a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) solicitation aimed at converting transport aircraft into airborne launch platforms for AI-coordinated drone swarms, with the drones intended to help guard airbases and the aircraft parked on them. Proposals are due Oct. 21.

The solicitation describes a dual-purpose concept. Transport planes would serve as motherships capable of releasing swarms at altitude, while those same uncrewed aerial systems would then operate autonomously to monitor and secure a designated base perimeter using onboard visual and thermal sensors.

Three missions in one solicitation

First, the Air Force wants transport aircraft equipped with added intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capability, effectively turning them into high-altitude drone carriers. The idea builds on earlier work: in 2021, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) demonstrated mid-air recovery of an X-61 Gremlin drone by a C-130. A footnote in the SBIR also references Air Mobility Command discussions about using KC-135 tankers as launch platforms.

Second, the service is seeking “self-protection for Mobility Air Forces operating in contested airspace” — a concern underscored by recent congressional reporting that Iranian strikes destroyed or damaged dozens of U.S. aircraft, including tankers and airborne warning and control system (AWACS) planes, parked at Persian Gulf airbases during the recent conflict.

Third, rapidly deployable autonomous swarms would bolster security at forward bases, providing what the solicitation calls perimeter defense networks that augment the security posture of the installations from which mobility aircraft operate.

Skipping the early stages

Notably, the project bypasses the customary Phase I feasibility study and goes directly to Phase II. The Air Force reasoned that the technical merit of coordinating multiple uncrewed aerial systems via artificial intelligence “has already been established by the private sector.”

Phase II contractors will be expected to demonstrate releasing drone swarms from cargo aircraft at operational altitudes in scenarios simulating Mobility Air Forces missions, and to show the swarm’s capacity to autonomously monitor and defend a perimeter. A single AI software stack is meant to handle both roles, transitioning from aerial deployment into coordinated flight and then perimeter operations.

Defence technology firms of various sizes are expected to follow the solicitation. Among smaller publicly traded players in the defense segment, National Presto Industries (NPK) — an Industrials-sector company in the Aerospace & Defense industry — closed most recently at $146.52, down 0.81% from its prior close of $147.72, with a market capitalization of roughly $1.06 billion.
