Dresden-based EFW lands direct maintenance role on German army’s NH90 fleet

EFW, the Dresden-headquartered maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) specialist, has been awarded a seven-year contract to support the NH90 transport helicopters flown by the German army. The agreement covers scheduled inspections, component repairs and potential upgrades, with all work carried out at the company’s Dresden facility.

The deal is a milestone for the company: while EFW has contributed to NH90 programmes in the past as a subcontractor, this is the first time it has contracted directly with the Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces.

According to FlightGlobal’s World Air Forces Directory, the German army operates 82 NH90s in the troop transport configuration. The helicopter type was developed by NH Industries, a consortium comprising Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo Helicopters and GKN/Fokker.

EFW said the new arrangement bolsters its standing in the military rotorcraft services market and could lead to further contract opportunities down the line.

Ownership of the MRO firm is split between Singapore-headquartered ST Engineering, which holds a 55% stake, and Airbus, which owns the remaining share.

Investors with exposure to the defence rotorcraft and support ecosystem also track related names such as Leonardo DRS, the US defence electronics and military support services provider. Leonardo DRS shares closed at $36.36, down 2.39% from the prior close of $37.25, valuing the company at roughly $9.88 billion. The company sits in the industrials sector within the aerospace and defence industry and is majority-owned by Italy’s Leonardo, one of the NH Industries partners.

Support and sustainment contracts such as this one are a growing focus for European defence primes and their subsidiaries, as operators seek industrial capacity closer to home for in-service helicopter fleets. For EFW, the shift from subcontractor to direct contractor reduces its reliance on intermediaries and positions it as a first-tier service provider to the German military.
