L3Harris lands US Navy order for VAMPIRE counter-drone platforms

L3Harris Technologies has received an order to supply its VAMPIRE counter-unmanned aircraft systems to the US Navy, adding a naval customer to a platform that has largely been associated with land-based use to date.

VAMPIRE — short for Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment — is a modular, palletized kit designed to be installed on a range of vehicles or platforms without permanent modification. The system pairs lightweight rocket munitions with sensor and tracking components to detect, track and defeat small unmanned aerial vehicles, a threat category that has grown in prominence across recent conflicts.

The modular design has been a key selling point: because the equipment is palletized, it can be moved between platforms and configured for different mission sets, which reduces integration time and cost compared with purpose-built systems. For the Navy, the delivery suggests continued service interest in adaptable counter-drone options that can be fielded quickly.

L3Harris has been expanding its portfolio in the counter-UAS (unmanned aircraft system) segment as demand accelerates from both US and allied customers. The company, headquartered in Melbourne, Florida, operates across segments including Space & Mission Systems, Communications & Spectrum Dominance, and Missile Solutions, positioning it across multiple layers of the air-defence value chain.

The company’s stock (LHX) closed at $255.74, unchanged on the day, giving it a market capitalisation of roughly $48.8 billion. The Navy order arrives as defence primes broadly report sustained government demand for air-defence and counter-drone capabilities in budget requests and international procurement programmes.

Financial terms of the delivery order and timelines for fielding were not disclosed in the announcement. Counter-drone contracts of this type are often structured as Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) arrangements, where initial awards are followed by task orders as requirements firm up — details L3Harris may clarify in subsequent disclosures.

The award underscores how counter-small-UAS has shifted from a niche capability to a standing budget line across the US armed services, with each branch pursuing a mix of kinetic, electronic and directed-energy solutions to address the proliferating drone threat.
