Tanker Strikes Escalate in Gulf as Iran and US Trade Largest Wave of Maritime Attacks Since War Began

Iran and the United States exchanged their most extensive declared round of attacks on commercial shipping of the six-month-old conflict, according to statements from both governments on Wednesday. Iran said it had struck 10 vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, hours after the US said it sank five Iranian crude oil tankers overnight.

At least one seafarer was killed and another reported missing aboard the oil products tanker Hercules Star, at anchorage off Dubai, according to the vessel’s charterer, Peninsula. Maritime security sources suggested the ship may have been struck by a drone. The British maritime security agency UKMTO separately reported a listing vessel in the area, possibly taking on water after a projectile hit, though it was unclear whether this referred to the same ship.

Energy markets and wider targets

Oil prices surged on the news, with Brent crude — the international benchmark — passing $100 a barrel for the first time since July. A tanker carrying some 2 million barrels of fuel oil, the New Andros, caught fire after a drone strike in Iraqi waters, according to two Iraqi port officials, with no casualties reported among its 22 crew. UKMTO said it had received reports of several merchant vessels hit in the northern Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Iran also threatened tankers at Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports, according to state media, and said it had fired ballistic missiles at a base used by US forces in Jordan.

The US military’s Central Command said its tanker strikes were retaliation for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeting a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice in two days, adding that no American personnel were harmed. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iran would “lose tankers” each time it attempted to strike US naval vessels.

The Revolutionary Guards warned of sharply escalating any further exchanges and said Iran would publish maps of a larger maritime exclusion zone extending along its coast toward Chabahar, near the border with Pakistan. Fighting between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthis has also intensified in recent days, adding pressure on Middle East energy supply routes.

On financial markets, shares of defence-adjacent electronics supplier Benchmark Electronics, Inc. (BHE) closed up 0.62% at $74.38, against a previous close of $73.92, giving the company a market capitalisation of roughly $2.67 billion.
