L3Harris’ VAMPIRE System Tapped by Navy for Coastal Counter-Drone Role

The U.S. Navy has selected L3Harris Technologies’ VAMPIRE counter-unmanned aircraft system for littoral defence applications, according to a report by Aero-News.net, adding a maritime dimension to a platform that has already drawn international attention.

VAMPIRE — short for Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment — is a modular, palletized system designed to defeat small unmanned aerial threats. Its name reflects a key design feature: the kit can be installed on a wide range of vehicles without permanent modification, making it adaptable to different platforms and mission profiles. The system pairs sensors with rocket-based interceptors to address the growing category of small drones that are difficult to counter with larger, more expensive missile systems.

The Navy’s littoral focus underscores how uncrewed aerial systems have become a priority concern for operations close to shore, where small drones are inexpensive, plentiful and hard to detect against coastal clutter. Selecting a commercially developed, palletized solution aligns with the broader Pentagon push toward rapidly fielded counter-drone defences rather than lengthy bespoke acquisition programs.

L3Harris has previously announced orders for VAMPIRE from international customers, including Ukraine, which received the systems under U.S. security assistance. The platform has been positioned by the company as a low-cost, quickly deployable option in a market segment that has attracted intense interest from primes and smaller defence-technology firms alike.

L3Harris Technologies (LHX), headquartered in Melbourne, Florida, operates through three segments: Space & Mission Systems, Communications & Spectrum Dominance, and Missile Solutions. The counter-drone portfolio sits within its broader aerospace and defence business serving government customers worldwide. Shares of LHX traded at $252.52 on the session, down 1.26% from the previous close of $255.74, valuing the company at roughly $48.8 billion.

The Navy’s move also reflects a wider trend across the armed services: as commercial drone technology proliferates, services are seeking layered defences spanning fixed sites, ships and mobile ground platforms. Palletized systems like VAMPIRE are designed to slot into that layered architecture without heavy integration work, allowing commanders to scale protection as threats evolve.
