Amazon pauses 21 Air flying after fatal Miami 767 runway overrun

Amazon has suspended its cargo operations with 21 Air, the carrier whose Boeing 767-300 freighter overran a runway at Miami on 6 September in an accident that killed five people. The aircraft, which carried Prime Air branding and was flying on the retailer’s behalf, struck vehicles and crossed a highway before coming to a stop after landing on runway 30.

An Amazon spokesperson, Kelly Nantel, said the company had been reviewing the circumstances surrounding the accident and had elected to pause its flying with 21 Air as a result. She added that safety is a priority both in Amazon’s own operations and in its work with partner carriers, and that the company will continue to support the investigation and those affected by the crash.

Preliminary findings

Early findings from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the US agency responsible for investigating civil aviation accidents, indicate that the aircraft’s approach to Miami was highly unstable. According to preliminary information, there was no evidence of a go-around attempt — the standard procedure of abandoning a landing and climbing away — until several seconds after touchdown.

Amazon relies on a network of cargo airline partners to move freight for its logistics network, meaning the suspension affects one part of a broader portfolio of contracted carriers rather than the company’s entire air operation.
