Textron Aviation Prepares First Medical-Configured SkyCourier for Handover

Textron Aviation, a unit of Textron Inc. (TXT), is weeks away from delivering the first air ambulance variant of its Cessna SkyCourier twin-engine turboprop, according to comments made at the Air & Space Forces Association conference near Washington DC on 14 September.

Bob Gibbs, the company’s vice president of defence and special mission sales, said Algeria’s Tassili Travail Aérien (TTA) will take two of the modified aircraft, an order first disclosed in 2025. The delivery marks an effort by Textron to broaden the SkyCourier’s role beyond its original cargo mission.

The medical configuration is designed around a modular interior. Gibbs described a setup in which seats can be removed and a medical kit installed using the existing seat tracks, locked down and plugged in to convert the aircraft for patient transport.

A Versatile Airframe Expanding Its Mission Set

Certified in 2022, the SkyCourier entered service as a flexible freighter with FedEx as launch customer. Textron has since developed combinations of passenger and freight layouts, as well as an all-passenger arrangement seating up to 19.

The company is also courting defence logistics customers, positioning the turboprop as a responsive resupply option for moving equipment where road infrastructure is limited. Gibbs argued that conventional supply chains have been disrupted, prompting interest in air-based alternatives.

Textron has partnered with autonomy developer Merlin Labs on an uncrewed derivative, the SkyCourier UX. Executives indicated that a first military delivery announcement could arrive in the coming weeks. Belgium placed the programme’s inaugural defence order in April 2026, with contractor Sabena Engineering agreeing to purchase five aircraft.

Shares of Textron Inc. closed recently at $79.55, up 0.75% from the prior close of $78.96, valuing the Industrials-sector company at roughly $14.3 billion.

What to watch

  • Confirmation of the first medical SkyCourier delivery to Tassili Travail Aérien in the coming weeks
  • An expected announcement regarding the first military SkyCourier deliveries
  • Progress on the SkyCourier UX uncrewed variant under the Merlin Labs partnership
  • Fulfilment of Belgium’s five-aircraft order placed via Sabena Engineering in April 2026
