Space Force outlines plan to double uniformed ranks with 10,000 new Guardians

The U.S. Space Force intends to add roughly 10,000 uniformed personnel — known as Guardians — over the next five years, a move that would double the size of the youngest military branch, service officials said this week.

Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM) chief Maj. Gen. James E. Smith told reporters at the Air & Space Forces Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference that the first wave of hiring will focus on instructors. More than 200 guardians and civilian specialists are being recruited to staff training pipelines ahead of the expected surge in students, with a “significant portion” of the five-year growth targeted for the first year.

The service, which counted more than 14,000 combined military and civilian personnel as of 2024 — including about 9,400 active-duty Guardians — is working to stand up its own education infrastructure rather than relying solely on Air Force courses. Smith said domain-specific training is needed for Guardians to integrate with the joint force, though the branch will continue partnering with the Air Force in the near term.

Training pipelines set for steep expansion

According to a STARCOM statement, the instructor hires span officer and enlisted basic training, commissioning programs, initial skills instruction and professional military education, with assignments at Air Force ROTC detachments nationwide, Officer Training School, the Air Force Academy, and enlisted training locations.

Planned fiscal 2027 expansions include:

• Basic Military Training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, growing more than 90% to accommodate 1,400 recruits
• Enlisted professional military education up nearly 120%, training more than 1,300 students annually
• Officer Training School scaling nearly 600% to around 850 trainees
• Air Force ROTC commissions roughly doubling to about 200 Guardians
• Officer Training Course at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, up 275% to more than 1,350 officers
• Officer professional military education eventually absorbing 1,600 additional students, a 330% increase

Smith emphasized that predictable budget resources would be essential to maintaining momentum into fiscal year 2027 and beyond.

Personnel growth in the Space Force typically drives demand for training services, simulation technology and mission-support contractors across the defence industrial base. Smaller diversified suppliers with defence exposure, such as National Presto Industries (NPK, last traded at $144.01, down 1.72% from the prior close of $146.52, with a market cap of roughly $1.06 billion), operate in the broader aerospace and defence sector that serves military customers, though no contracts were announced in connection with the manpower expansion.
