Huntington Ingalls Grows Unmanned Systems Footprint in Massachusetts
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has announced an expansion of its unmanned systems production facility in Massachusetts, broadening the shipbuilder’s manufacturing capacity beyond its traditional naval shipbuilding base.
The move reflects a wider trend among large defence primes, which have been investing in unmanned and autonomous platforms as the U.S. Department of Defense and allied customers increase spending on uncrewed maritime and aerial systems. For HII, unmanned systems sit largely within its Mission Technologies segment, which complements the company’s better-known Ingalls and Newport News shipbuilding divisions.
The announcement arrives during a volatile stretch for the company’s shares. HII stock traded at $282.19 in recent sessions, down 1.9% from the prior close of $287.67, valuing the company at roughly $11.5 billion. The Industrials-sector company remains one of the largest builders of military ships in the United States, encompassing both nuclear and non-nuclear vessel programs.
While the company did not disclose financial terms of the expansion in the announcement, the investment underscores how established shipbuilders are positioning for a defence procurement environment in which unmanned platforms are expected to take a growing share of acquisition budgets. Expanding domestic production capacity also aligns with broader industrial-base policy priorities favoring U.S.-based manufacturing for defence components.
The Massachusetts facility adds geographic diversity to HII’s operations, which are historically concentrated along the Gulf Coast and in Virginia. A production footprint in New England places the company closer to the region’s dense cluster of aerospace and defence technology suppliers and research institutions.
Investors and industry watchers will be looking at how the expansion translates into backlog and revenue in coming quarters, particularly as the company continues to balance its legacy shipbuilding programs with faster-growing technology-oriented business lines.
