UK sends Voyager tanker to support Saudi air-to-air refuelling efforts

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has committed a Royal Air Force (RAF) Airbus Defence & Space A330 Voyager tanker aircraft to support the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) with air-to-air refuelling, responding to a request from the Saudi government amid renewed regional violence.

The deployment follows Houthi attacks on Saudi territory, including ballistic missile strikes on Riyadh on 20 September. The UK government has publicly condemned those attacks, according to the MoD.

The aircraft will be based at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and operate in a defensive role, with the parameters of its support defined by the UK government. The Voyager can carry up to 109 tonnes of fuel, extending how long and how far accompanying combat aircraft can remain in the air without returning to base.

Saudi Arabia already fields its own tanker fleet of six A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, each fitted with an Aerial Refuelling Boom System alongside under-wing hose-and-drogue pods. The RAF Voyager, by contrast, is configured solely for hose-and-drogue refuelling — a flexible-probe method widely used by Western-designed fighter aircraft.

The RSAF’s combat fleet includes 72 Eurofighter Typhoon jets and some 210 Boeing F-15 aircraft across C, S and SA variants, as well as older Panavia Tornado airframes.

The MoD noted that the deployment adds to the UK’s existing contribution to Saudi Arabia’s air defence, which includes air defence equipment and UK personnel assisting with protection against missile and drone attacks.

Shares of Voyager-associated ticker VOYG closed at $35.43, up 3.65% from the previous close of $34.18, giving the company a market capitalisation of roughly $2.16 billion.
