IAG selects OpenAirlines’ SkyBreathe platform to trim fuel costs

British Airways and Iberia parent is rolling out the software across all of its units to help lower operating expenses amid volatile fuel prices.
Rising fuel costs and geopolitical pressures have prompted IAG to adopt OpenAirlines’ SkyBreathe fuel-efficiency platform across its operating carriers.

The artificial intelligence-driven software will analyse operational data across more than 600 aircraft operated by Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling.

SkyBreathe synthesises data from flight plans, weather forecasts and aircraft performance metrics to pinpoint specific fuel-saving opportunities while maintaining safety standards, says IAG. OpenAirlines indicates the system can reduce fuel consumption by up to 5%.

IAG carriers already employ various fuel-saving measures, such as optimising flight paths, reducing auxiliary power unit usage on the ground and implementing reduced-engine taxiing. However, these practices were previously monitored via disparate systems.

SkyBreathe introduces a unified data and reporting framework across the group, allowing airlines to benchmark performance consistently and share operational best practices.

The system is already operational at Aer Lingus, Iberia, Level and Vueling. British Airways is set to complete its deployment in the coming months.

“Fuel is one of the largest costs for our airlines, and ongoing fuel price volatility has reinforced the importance of improving efficiency wherever we can,” says IAG chief financial and sustainability officer Jose Antonio Barrionuevo.

“Having access to deeper operational insight will help identify savings more quickly and reduce unnecessary fuel burn.”

Alexandre Feray, founder and chief executive of OpenAirlines, adds that the platform is engineered to support the scale of major airline groups, enabling carriers to align around a single methodology.

OpenAirlines says its platform community saved about 714 million kg of fuel in 2025, equivalent to $600 million in cost savings and 2.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions avoided.
