Updated IFF system certificated for F-16

Updated IFF tool can handle new cybersecurity requirements.
A new BAE Systems Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) capability has been certificated for the Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter.

According to the company, the AN/APX-127(V)1 Combined Interrogator Transponder (CIT) will help F-16 pilots better distinguish between allied aircraft and threats in contested airspace.

The system is designed as a direct replacement for legacy CITs used on US and international aircraft and supports new cryptographic and cybersecurity requirements.

The system’s AIMS certification came from the US Department of War’s AIMS Program Office, which manages and standardises IFF for the US military and allies.

“We are investing in the next generation of our IFF technology to support our customers’ missions for today and tomorrow,” says Seth Guanu of BAE Systems.

“Our multi-domain systems are designed for high-performance; easily upgradeable; and meet size, weight, and power objectives for existing and emerging platforms. This solution provides added security and real-time information pilots need in a variety of threat environments.”

The company works on the AN/APX-127(V)1 system in Greenlawn, New York and Austin, Texas. It expects to start delivering its first 90-unit production run this year.
