Boeing secures first full-rate production order for MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters

October 2, 2026 · by DPW Pipeline

Deal caps off a major week that also included multibillion-dollar US Navy and US Air Force contract wins.

Boeing has received a contract for the first four full-rate production MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters. The announcement on 1 October came after the US Air Force (USAF) had declared initial operating capability for the programme in August.

The announcement also capped a major week for Boeing. The US Navy selected the manufacturer to build its sixth-generation F/A-XX fighter in a $20 billion contract, followed a day later on 30 September by a $2.38 billion deal for the USAF’s next batch of F-15EX Eagle II fighters.

Boeing has not disclosed a value for the Grey Wolf contract.

“This milestone validates key readiness levels for Grey Wolf and supports the service’s fielding plans to secure vital national assets across the country’s strategic missile fields,” says Kathleen Jolivette, vice-president and general manager, Vertical Lift Programs for Boeing Defense, Space & Security. “Adding these aircraft to the production queue brings additional momentum to ongoing fielding and modernisation efforts.”

This latest round of orders follows an order for eight MH-139As in September 2025 and four in January 2026. Those two contracts, including sustainment activities, are worth over $262 million, Boeing says.

The latest commitment brings the total number of MH-139A rotorcraft under contract to 42, with Boeing having delivered 27 to date.

The MH-139A has been on one operational mission to date, on 8 January 2026. Two aircraft from the 40th Helicopter Squadron conducted their first operational Minuteman III inter-continental ballistic missile convoy security mission at Malmstrom AFB in Montana. That six-hour deployment involved escorting missile maintenance and armoured security vehicles over 100 miles to and from a remote launch facility, without requiring refuelling.

Boeing says the first full-rate production award clears the way to scale MH-139A deployment for real-world operations.

The MH-139A is a USAF-optimised development of the Leonardo Helicopters AW139.
