Draken deploys Sting and Phantom Sky training combination for first time

October 15, 2026 · by DPW Pipeline

Technology simulated integrated air defence system threat for UK and allies.
Draken has completed the first training delivery of its ‘Sting’ simulated ground-based air defence system capability employed alongside its ‘Phantom Sky’ control technology, both of which form part of its wider ‘Red Force’ ecosystem.

The UK Royal Air Force’s (RAF’s) Cobra Warrior 26-2 training event, staged from 14 September to 2 October, saw Sting deployed from two of the service’s bases. The exercise was conducted alongside NATO allies including Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the US.

The combination of Draken’s technologies provided simulated integrated air defence system threats for UK and allied aircrews within a contested training scenario.

Phantom Sky coordinates training activity and enables real-time monitoring, adjudication and control of threat systems across the exercise battlespace, while Sting replicates ground-based air defence threats, including surface-to-air missile systems, supporting suppression of enemy air defences training.

The initial deployment progresses Draken’s developing portfolio of threat replication for advanced training exercises.

“The deployment of Sting for the first time represents a significant achievement for Draken and our customer,” says chief executive Nic Anderson. “Working alongside Phantom Sky, Sting provides a realistic, adaptable and affordable way to replicate modern air defence threats in the live training environment.”

Also during Cobra Warrior, Draken provided wider adversary training services using some of its privately-owned Aero Vodochody L-159s and electronic warfare-adapted Dassault Aviation Falcon 20s. It refers to those capabilities as ‘Sword’ and ‘Shield’ respectively under its Red Force construct.

Previously, Draken’s chief technology officer Nick Lay outlined to FlightGlobal another training capability in development named ‘Shadow’, which is aimed at training against uncrewed threats.

“We are looking towards a future where air forces will want to practice interceptions and defensive counter-air operations against a range of uncrewed threats,” he said, with those assets ranging from low-speed Shahed-type one-way attack drones up to cruise missiles.
