Gulfstream showcases stunning images from Iceland flight campaign
Team had to overcome with multiple challenges, including changeable weather conditions and scheduling constraints.
Gulfstream has provided a glimpse behind the scenes into the logistics and organisation required to pull off a recent marketing video and photo shoot in Iceland.
Although the US airframer had scouted the locations it wanted as a backdrop, the island’s constantly changing weather was just one of several challenges to overcome, says test pilot Tobias van Esselstyn.
“If you go to Iceland and want to do anything there you are going to constantly check the weather and be flexible in your plans,” he says.

To cope with the changeability, Gulfstream’s team used a website featuring live feeds from highway cameras “to see in real time what the weather conditions were” in other parts of the country.
That data feed was streamed directly onto an iPad in the cockpit of the jet coordinating that day’s filming, he adds.
Other issues included operating in an unfamiliar jurisdiction and airspace environment and juggling the availability of the Gulfstream fleet given its many other commitments.
Gulfstream used four aircraft for the campaign – the G500, G600, G700 and G800 – with two aircraft involved each day, plus a camera-equipped aircraft from an external contractor.

As another mitigation against the weather issues, Gulfstream also tasked one of the three aircraft to reconnoitre other areas of the island while the shoot was taking place, says van Esselstyn.
Matt Stephan, Gulfstream content strategist, says the Nordic country “provided an amazing backdrop for our products” and “combining the two almost create fine art”.
Although Gulfstream used sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for some of the ferry flights from the USA to Iceland, the lack of SAF availability at Reykjavik prevented its use during the shoots.
“We are committed to this: anywhere in the world we can get [SAF], we do,” says company president Mark Burns. “It was just not feasible to get it to this location.”
