L3Harris secures development contract for US Navy’s low-band jammer
The system is part of a new family of jamming equipment for the EA-18G Growler.
L3Harris has secured an $876 million contract related to the US Navy’s Next Generation Jammer Low Band (NGJ-LB) programme.
The undefinitised contract modification award – which allows work to start before the final terms are fully negotiated – cover’s the system’s next engineering and manufacturing phase, says the company.
When deployed on the Boeing EA-18G Growler electronic attack jets in service with the USN and the Royal Australian Air Force, the NGJ-LB will disrupt and degrade enemy and radar communications.
L3Harris’s development of the NGJ-LB follows the deployment of Raytheon’s Next Generation Jammer Mid-Band (NGJ-MB), which attained initial operational capability in January 2025.
“This program enhances the ability to counter adversaries operating in lower-frequency bands,” said Chris Aebli, president of Comm Communications & Spectrum Dominance, L3Harris.
“We’re moving fast to deliver a system that equips aviators to counter those threats from safer, extended distances.”
The official designation of the NGJ-MB is AN/ALQ-249(V)1, while that of the NGJ-LB is AN/ALQ-249(V)2. A high-band variant will also be developed.
The new pods are intended to the replace the AN/ALQ-99 tactical jamming system. Using active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology – as opposed to the older system’s mechanic array – the new jammers are better able to jam complex threats at longer ranges.
