Pentagon chief appears with new Sierra Nevada E-4C ‘Doomsday’ jet

October 21, 2026 · by DPW Pipeline

Pete Hegseth described the Survivable Airborne Operations Center as one of Washington’s ‘most vital assets’.

US defence chief Pete Hegseth has made an appearance with one of the US Air Force’s new E-4C Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) jets, which are under development by contractor Sierra Nevada (SNC).

Hegseth, who styles himself as the secretary of war, was visiting an SNC facility in Dayton, Ohio, where the company is conducting flight test and development activity on the SAOC programme. Based on a modified Boeing 747-8, E-4C is meant to replace the USAF’s aged fleet of Boeing E-4B Nightwatch aircraft, which are capable of commanding the American nuclear arsenal from aloft.

Over five decades of service, that grim duty has earned the E-4B the moniker “Doomsday” jet.

During his remarks on 20 October, Hegseth described the new SAOC fleet as one of Washington’s “most vital assets”.

“In a Doomsday scenario, SAOC provides the president with unbreakable command and control. No other nation on planet earth has these types of capabilities, serving as our nation’s ultimate insurance policy in a no-fail mission,” he said.

The civilian head of the air force, secretary Troy Meink, accompanied Hegseth on the tour in Dayton.

Nevada-headquartered SNC secured the $13 billion contract for the E-4C in 2024, having emerged as the sole competitor after Boeing withdrew its bid in 2023, at the time citing an impasse with the USAF related to contract terms.

SNC subsequently purchased five second-hand 747-8s from Korean Air for conversion into E-4Cs. That same year, GE Aerospace received a USAF contract under the SAOC programme to overhaul and upgrade GEnx-2B engines, which power 747-8s.

The outgoing E-4B Nightwatch is similarly based on heavily modified 747-200 airliners.

The lead E-4C logged its first test sortie in 2025, with delivery of the full SAOC fleet scheduled to be complete by 2036.
