Qatar Airways to fly to new Western Sydney airport in 2027
Airline is the first Middle East carrier to operate at new gateway.
Qatar Airways will launch direct flights to the new Western Sydney International airport (WSI) in 2027, providing the airport a key network boost ahead of its official opening.
Qatar Airways will operate three weekly flights between Doha and WSI from 15 December 2027, deploying its Boeing 777-300ER on the route.
WSI will be the airline’s seventh point in Australia, alongside main airport Sydney Kingsford Smith, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.
“Qatar Airways intends to progressively increase the service to daily operations further strengthening connectivity and customer choice,” the airline adds.
Airline chief Hamad Al Khater states: ”Our launch at Western Sydney International is the next chapter in our long-standing partnership with Australia, one of our most important markets.”
Qatar Airways adds that the new WSI route “will complement the broader growth plans” of its partnership with Virgin Australia, “supporting additional network development opportunities and enhanced access to international destinations for Australian travellers”. Virgin Australia has not committed to operating to WSI yet.
Qatar Airways is the first Middle East carrier to operate to WSI, Sydney’s second international gateway. Other confirmed international carriers comprise Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways and Vietjet.
National carrier Qantas and its low-cost unit Jetstar are also set to operate from WSI, with the latter being the launch operator on 25 October.
WSI is intended for round-the-clock operations with no curfew, unlike Kingsford Smith. When fully operational, the single-runway airport will be able to handle up to 10 million passengers annually.
