Argentina’s military accepts sixth and final Bell 407GXi
The helicopters will help to enhance operational capability.
The Argentinian armed forces have received their sixth Bell 407GXi, completing a process initiated in 2023.
The final delivery to Campo de Mayo on 20 October completes the order, which is split between the Argentinian air force and army. Deliveries had been staggered since 2023, with one unit delivered that year and four in 2025.
They will replace older Aerospatiale SA315B Lama helicopters.
The 407GXis were purchased directly from Bell Textron Canada, with the government-to-government deal arranged through the Canadian Commercial Corporation.
“The Bell 407 strengthens our ability to operate in demanding geographical environments, particularly in the mountains, where altitude, terrain, and weather conditions test the preparedness of our crews,” says defence minister Lieutenant General Carlos Alberto Presti.
The 407GXi was specifically selected due to its lightweight design, powered by a single Rolls-Royce 250-C47E B/8 engine. The empty weight of the helicopter is 1,220kg (2,700lb), consequently providing a power-to-weight ratio that allows the helicopter to operate in high-altitude environments such as the Andes mountain range, according to the Argentina’s defence ministry.
As the helicopters will be used specifically for humanitarian aid and cargo transport, the three examples operated by the air force feature a distinctive orange and white livery to enable the aircraft to be highly visible.
Equipped for success
The 407GXi features the Garmin G1000 NXi integrated flight deck, which provides flight data, navigation, synthetic terrain representation, and proximity alerts that enhance situational awareness for pilots on board.
The model has already been used in a successful firefighting operation, using the Bambi Bucket system in Los Alerces National Park in January 2026.
In addition to the aircraft, the contract, worth C$43 million ($30.6 million), will also provide training for pilots and technical staff, with a particular focus on wildfire procedures.
