A220 to be first airliner to carry Safran military anti-interference navigation system

October 23, 2026 · by DPW Pipeline

Twinjet model to be offered with system intended to counter impact of GPS jamming.
Airbus A220s will be able to offer resistance to satellite-based navigation interference with the introduction of a Safran system already in use on military aircraft.

The airframer has selected the SkyNaute system for the twinjet type, says the French aerospace firm.

SkyNaute combines inertial navigation with hybridised satellite-navigation data to enable the aircraft to maintain a reliable trajectory.

“For the first time our inertial navigation system will fly on an airliner,” says Safran Electronics & Defense avionics head Benjamin Declety.

The system uses tehnology including hemispherical resonator gyroscopes.

“With no mechanical parts subject to wear, this sensor offers unmatched compactness and high resilience in harsh environments,” says Safran.

SkyNaute is able to provide accurate navigation in the event of satellite navigation signal denial, jamming or spoofing.

It has previously been offered for military aircraft, helicopters and drones.

Safran says the system “brings commercial air transport a decisive advantage from the defence world”.

It adds that the Airbus selection illustrates SkyNaute’s ability to “adapt to aircraft with very different integration constraints”.
