L3Harris Completes Full-Scale Testing of Advanced Solid-Fueled Ramjet

L3Harris Technologies, Inc. has successfully completed full-scale ground tests of a new solid-fueled ramjet engine. The trials are part of an effort to develop propulsion systems that can extend the range of missiles while maintaining cost-effective production scales for U.S. military applications.

Ramjets operate by using the forward motion of a vehicle to compress incoming air for combustion, allowing for sustained high speeds. The use of solid fuel simplifies the engine design compared to liquid-fueled systems, which can reduce logistical complexity and manufacturing costs. L3Harris stated that the recent tests were intended to validate the performance and affordability of the technology.

The development aligns with the company’s Missile Solutions (MSL) segment, which focuses on advanced weaponry and precision strike capabilities. By integrating this propulsion technology, the company aims to address requirements for longer-range flight profiles without a corresponding exponential increase in unit cost.

L3Harris trades on the market under the ticker LHX. As of the previous close, the stock was priced at $263.35, with a current market capitalization of approximately $51.6 billion. The company operates within the Industrials sector, specifically the Aerospace & Defense industry, and provides mission-critical solutions across its Space & Mission Systems and Communications & Spectrum Dominance segments.

What to watch

  • Future contract awards related to the integration of this ramjet technology into specific missile platforms.
  • Updates from the Missile Solutions segment regarding production timelines and government procurement milestones.
  • Upcoming quarterly earnings reports for data on R&D spending and segment performance.
