GCAP Programme Awards 18-Month Electronics Contract to G2E Consortium
GCAP Programme Awards 18-Month Electronics Contract to G2E Consortium
The Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) — the trilateral fighter initiative uniting Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom — has reached another development milestone. Edgewing, the joint venture responsible for the programme’s aircraft design, has placed an 18-month contract with the GCAP Electronics Evolution (G2E) consortium, which is tasked with advancing the platform’s integrated sensing and communications capabilities.
G2E brings together ELT Group and Leonardo of Italy, Mitsubishi Electric of Japan, and Leonardo UK. The consortium’s work focuses on the electronics suite intended to give the future combat aircraft a high degree of sensor integration, drawing together large volumes of data for crews.
Andrew Howard, G2E’s interim general manager, characterised the award as evidence of the consortium’s transition from separately operated national companies into a unified international organisation, saying the group is prepared for the next phase of development work.
Edgewing — a venture of Leonardo, Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement and BAE Systems — is leading development of the sixth-generation fighter, with introduction targeted by 2035. The venture is also slated to serve as prime contractor and design authority for the programme.
The electronics award follows a much larger commitment earlier in the summer: a £4.6 billion (roughly $6.1 billion) contract, announced in early July, funding completion of GCAP’s concept and assessment phase by the end of 2027. Detailed design activity is expected to follow, leading toward an operational system.
Investors with exposure to the defence electronics supply chain continue to track developments tied to Leonardo and its subsidiaries. In US trading, Leonardo DRS (NASDAQ: DRS) — which provides defence electronic products and systems through its Advanced Sensing and Computing and Integrated Mission Systems segments — closed at $36.06, down 3.19% from the prior close of $37.25, valuing the company at approximately $9.88 billion. Elsewhere in the sector, National Presto Industries (NYSE: NPK), whose defence segment complements its housewares business, traded at $144.01, down 1.72% from $146.52, with a market capitalisation near $1.06 billion. Neither company is directly involved in GCAP.
What to watch
- Completion of the GCAP concept and assessment phase by the end of 2027 under the £4.6 billion contract awarded in July.
- Progress reports on the 18-month G2E electronics development contract, including any follow-on awards for detailed design work.
- Updates from Edgewing on the path to a 2035 target introduction date, and formal establishment of the programme’s international governance structure.
