Huntington Ingalls Picks Up Navy Carrier Contract and Army Task Order Wins

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has announced two pieces of contract news: a U.S. Navy award related to aircraft carrier work and a new task order from the U.S. Army. The announcements underscore the shipbuilder’s dual role as both the nation’s sole builder of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and a growing provider of technology services to defense customers.

The Navy award falls under the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding operations, which handle the design, construction, and lifecycle support of carriers and submarines. Carrier programs represent long-cycle revenue, often spanning decades from construction through refueling and overhaul, giving HII one of the most durable backlog profiles in the defence industrial base.

Separately, the Army task order was booked through the company’s Mission Technologies segment, which provides services ranging from C5ISR (command, control, communications, computers, cyber, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) support to artificial intelligence and uncrewed systems work. Task orders under existing IDIQ (indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity) vehicles typically reflect follow-on demand from government clients rather than new contract vehicles.

Despite the news flow, HII shares traded lower on the day, changing hands at $282.19, down about 1.9% from the prior close of $287.67. The company’s market capitalization stood at roughly $11.5 billion. Headlines aggregated by third-party outlets framed the contract announcements as positive momentum for the stock, though shares moved in the opposite direction in Tuesday trading, a reminder that individual contract wins rarely shift the price of a company with a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar backlog.

HII operates through three reporting segments — Ingalls, Newport News, and Mission Technologies. Ingalls builds non-nuclear surface combatants such as destroyers and amphibious ships, while Newport News carries the carrier and submarine portfolio. Mission Technologies has increasingly served as the company’s growth engine, diversifying revenue beyond traditional shipbuilding into digital and engineering services across all military branches.

For the shipbuilding giant, Navy carrier work remains the anchor business; the Army task order, while smaller in scope, illustrates the cross-branch reach of its services arm.

What to watch

  • HII’s next quarterly earnings report, including backlog figures and segment margin commentary from Newport News and Mission Technologies.
  • Progression of Navy carrier and submarine program funding in forthcoming defense appropriations legislation.
  • Any follow-on task orders under the Army services vehicle referenced in the announcement.
  • Guidance updates on shipbuilding throughput and supply-chain conditions in the company’s investor communications.
