HII Sets Ribbon-Cutting for Expanded Unmanned Systems Facility

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the expansion of one of its unmanned systems facilities, according to a media advisory issued by the shipbuilder. The event will spotlight the company’s growing footprint in unmanned maritime platforms, an area where the defence prime has invested in dedicated production capacity in recent years.

HII, best known as America’s largest military shipbuilder through its Ingalls and Newport News shipyard segments, has in recent years pushed to diversify beyond traditional ship construction. Its Mission Technologies segment houses the company’s work on unmanned surface and underwater vehicles, autonomous systems, and related technologies. Expansions like the one being marked this week are intended to give that business additional floor space for assembly, integration, and testing as demand from the U.S. Navy and other customers grows for crewless platforms that can complement crewed vessels.

The company says the ceremony will include remarks from company leadership and local officials, though the advisory did not disclose specifics about staffing additions, square footage, or timing of production increases tied to the expanded space. Details on which programs will occupy the facility were also not provided.

In the market, HII shares traded at $282.19, down 1.9% from the previous close of $287.67, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $11.5 billion. HII operates within the industrials sector, classified under the aerospace and defence industry.

The announcement comes as defence contractors broadly emphasize unmanned and autonomous capabilities in their investment plans. For HII, the unmanned systems line sits alongside its core shipbuilding franchises, and facility expansion suggests the company is positioning that business for a larger role in its portfolio. The company has publicly positioned itself as a supplier of both large and small unmanned maritime vehicles intended to work in concert with the fleet.

What to watch

  • Details from the ribbon-cutting event, including any capacity, hiring, or program assignments announced.
  • HII’s next quarterly earnings report, which may include updates on Mission Technologies revenue and backlog.
  • U.S. Navy budget requests and contract awards related to unmanned surface and undersea vehicles.
  • Any follow-on announcements about production milestones at the expanded facility.
