Aura Aero Takes Former VoltAero Hybrid-Electric Demonstrator Back to the Skies as X-Volt
Toulouse-based aircraft developer Aura Aero has returned a hybrid-electric testbed to flight, nearly a year after acquiring the assets of failed French rival VoltAero in June. The aircraft, once known as the Cassio S, has been rechristened the X-Volt and is now flying as part of Aura Aero’s development programme for its 19-seat ERA regional aircraft.
The X-Volt began life as a twin-engined Cessna 337 Skymaster — a type originally produced by Textron‘s Textron Aviation segment — and has been modified with two wing-mounted ENGINeUS electric motors. Those same motors are slated to power the ERA, Aura Aero’s hybrid-electric 19-seater, giving the company a way to evaluate the propulsion hardware in flight before committing it to the new prototype.
According to the company, the X-Volt will let engineers exercise key elements of the ERA’s future propulsion system under real flight conditions. Beyond propulsion, Aura Aero also plans to use the aircraft as a flying testbed for other systems, whether developed internally or by third parties.
Building on prior electric experience
Before the X-Volt, Aura Aero’s electric-flight experience came largely from its Integral E, a two-seat trainer also equipped with ENGINeUS motors. Taken together, the Integral E and the newly revived demonstrator have logged a combined 350 hybrid or electric flights, the company says.
The effort is tied to a tight timeline: Aura Aero targets a first flight for the ERA prototype in late 2027. Demonstrators such as the X-Volt are a common de-risking step in new aircraft programmes, allowing propulsion and systems integration work to proceed at lower cost and risk than prototype-level testing would allow.
The episode also illustrates how assets from failed electric-aviation ventures can find second lives. VoltAero, which had been developing its own hybrid-electric family based on the same Skymaster platform, collapsed before its aircraft reached production; Aura Aero’s June asset purchase preserved both the airframe and its accumulated test groundwork.
What to watch
- Progress updates on the ERA prototype as the late-2027 first-flight target approaches.
- Further flight-test milestones for the X-Volt, including any additional systems tested beyond propulsion.
- Announcements on suppliers or partners for the ENGINeUS motor integration.
