Counter-Drone Systems Draw Navy Attention as Aboard-Ship Defense Needs Grow

The U.S. Navy’s ongoing challenge of defending surface vessels against small drones has put a renewed spotlight on modular counter-unmanned aircraft systems (counter-UAS), including the “VAMPIRE” platform — short for Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment — according to a recent analysis published by The National Interest.

VAMPIRE, developed by technology company L3Harris, was originally designed as a palletized, truck-mountable system that can be moved between platforms without extensive integration work. That flexibility is central to its appeal: rather than requiring a dedicated hull or permanent installation, the system can be deployed in a containerized format and adapted to whatever platform is available. The National Interest piece argues that this portability could make the system a candidate for addressing the Navy’s need for layered defense against inexpensive unmanned aerial vehicles, which have proven costly to defeat with traditional shipboard missiles.

The core economics of the drone threat have reshaped procurement conversations across the defence sector. When a low-cost uncrewed aircraft can be neutralized only by interceptors that cost orders of magnitude more, navies face a sustainability problem. Rocket-based systems like VAMPIRE sit in a middle tier — more capable than guns or jammers, but less expensive per engagement than dedicated surface-to-air missiles. The system gained wider public visibility following its announced donation to Ukraine, where it has been used against small drone threats.

Investor interest in counter-drone technology extends across the industry, including smaller defence suppliers. National Presto Industries (NYSE American: NPK), an Industrials-sector company in the Aerospace & Defense industry, operates a defence segment alongside its housewares business. Shares of National Presto closed at $144.01, down 1.72% from the previous close of $146.52, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $1.06 billion.

The Navy has not announced any procurement decision related to VAMPIRE. Any adoption of a palletized counter-drone system for shipboard or shore-based use would surface through budget documents, contract awards, or testing programs, which remain the authoritative public record on the service’s counter-UAS roadmap.
