L3Harris Leans on International Expansion as It Seeks New Growth Avenues

L3Harris Technologies (LHX) has been steadily broadening its footprint beyond the U.S. defence market, a strategy that analysts and industry watchers are examining as a potential driver of the company’s next phase of growth. Shares of the Melbourne, Florida-based defence prime traded at $252.52 on Monday, down 1.26% from the previous close of $255.74, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $48.8 billion.

The company, which supplies mission-critical solutions to government and commercial customers worldwide, organizes its operations around three segments: Space & Mission Systems (SMS), Communications & Spectrum Dominance (CSD), and Missile Solutions (MSL). That portfolio spans satellite payloads, tactical communications equipment, and munitions-related programs — areas where allied demand has been rising as NATO members and partner nations work toward defense spending commitments.

International orders have become an increasingly visible part of the growth narrative for U.S. defense contractors broadly, and L3Harris is no exception. European rearmament efforts, Indo-Pacific procurement programs, and modernization initiatives in the Middle East have created a larger addressable market for American suppliers. For L3Harris, expanding its global reach could help diversify revenue away from U.S. government budgets, which — while robust — are subject to appropriation cycles and political negotiation in Washington.

That said, international growth is not without friction. Foreign military sales require U.S. government approval, and direct commercial sales to allied governments often involve lengthy procurement timelines. Competing primes such as Lockheed Martin, RTX, and Boeing are pursuing the same allied customers, which can compress margins on international competitions. Currency movements and offset obligations — requirements to reinvest a portion of contract value in the purchasing country’s economy — add further complexity to overseas deals.

For investors tracking the company, the question raised in recent market commentary is whether the international pipeline can translate into sustained revenue and margin improvement. The company’s segment mix matters here: space and communications programs tend to carry different growth profiles and margin structures than missile-related work, and the weighting among the three segments will shape overall results.

L3Harris has also been working through internal integration following its 2023 acquisition of Aerojet Rocketdyne, which bolstered its propulsion capabilities and feeds into the Missile Solutions segment. How effectively management realizes synergies from that deal, alongside international demand, will likely feature in upcoming financial disclosures.

What to watch

  • L3Harris’s next quarterly earnings report, including international order backlog and book-to-bill figures.
  • Updates on segment revenue mix across Space & Mission Systems, Communications & Spectrum Dominance, and Missile Solutions.
  • Announcements of foreign military sales approvals or new international contract awards.
  • Progress on Aerojet Rocketdyne integration and related synergy targets.
  • U.S. defense appropriations developments that could affect domestic demand assumptions.
