L3Harris Pitches Modernization Path to Extend KC-135 Tanker Fleet Life Past 2050

L3Harris Technologies (LHX) has put forward a proposal to upgrade the US Air Force’s KC-135 Stratotanker fleet, outlining a modernization concept intended to keep the ageing tanker aircraft in service beyond 2050, according to a report by Air Data News.

The KC-135, which entered service in the late 1950s, remains a backbone of the US aerial refueling fleet. Aerial refueling aircraft allow other military planes to take on fuel mid-flight, extending their range and time on station. The fleet’s advanced age has long driven discussion within the Pentagon about how to sustain it while the newer KC-46 Pegasus and KC-46A programs mature at a slower pace than originally planned.

An extension of the KC-135’s service life past mid-century would represent one of the longest operational runs for any military aircraft type. Sustainment and upgrade work of this kind typically spans avionics refresh, structural inspections and repairs, and improvements to cockpit systems, though the specific scope of L3Harris’s proposal has not been detailed publicly in full.

For L3Harris, the proposal aligns with its broader positioning in government services and mission systems work. The company, one of the larger defence contractors in the Aerospace & Defense industry, operates through three reporting segments: Space & Mission Systems, Communications & Spectrum Dominance, and Missile Solutions.

In Wednesday trading, L3Harris shares changed hands at $252.52, down 1.26% from the previous close of $255.74, valuing the company at roughly $48.8 billion.

Any KC-135 modernization effort would need to move through the Air Force’s budgeting and acquisition processes before contracts are awarded. Competing primes and sustainment specialists have historically contested large tanker lifecycle work, and it remains to be seen whether the service pursues a targeted upgrade approach or leans further into new-build tanker procurement to replace the legacy fleet.
